Career Prospects at ACT Public Service

Good managers who see your potential are important in being able to move up in the ranks.

It is relatively easy to move within ACT Government.

In two years I have progressed from an ASO4 to an ASO6 position, and I feel confident that I can continue to progress in my area or similar areas in the ACTPS.

Many jobs are advertised internally, which opens up a range of career progression possibilities. There are also many opportunities to act above level and hence get experience. However, many roles in my work area are very static due to staff in permanent contracts staying in their roles for the length of their career, making more specific opportunities harder to attain.

If I want the opportunity for promotion, I would have to leave my team and potentially my branch altogether as higher roles are already filled.

I now have exposure to the corporate side of Health Directorate and interact with multiple other areas, therefore giving myself the best opportunities for my career.

I have been supported to apply for several promotions and management has always been active in making sure the work I was engaging with was supportive of my career.

Lots of vacancies available; opportunity to work on higher duty or transfer to other areas to expand experience.

Graduates (ASO4 level) get permanently promoted to ASO5 after program completion. Within three months after finishing the program I secured an acting ASO6 role, and 3 months after that an acting Senior Officer Grade C (SOGC)role. Within a year after finishing the program I was offered a permanent SOGC role.

Plenty of opportunities for temporary transfers or promotions. Managers are very supportive of allowing staff to work in other areas to gain new skills.

I'm not certain about that yet as I'm not certain where I can go in my current role/team. I do have the option to apply to other teams/directorates though so that's an assurance in case this team does not work out.

I have been able and given the opportunity to act in higher level positions and this has enabled me to gain promotions quite quickly.

Opportunities for temporary transfers are regularly advertised. Movement across the organisation is easy and encouraged. Expectations on each staff level are available.

I progressed from the Graduate Program to a management position within 18 months.
