Pros & Cons

  • The ability to make a direct impact.
  • Amazing working environment, good ethics and great colleagues.
  • Career development opportunities, investment in training, salary, location.
  • Extremely flexible, it is one of the greatest benefits of working for the ACTPS.
  • The ACTPS is a very friendly and accepting work environment. The work is interesting, meaningful and diverse. Because it’s a small jurisdiction there are lots of opportunities to try new things.
  • Frustrating bureaucracy and processes.
  • Resource constraints.
  • Office conditions variable. Some buildings are new, some have old low quality facilities.
  • The amount of procedures that can control daily work tasks.
  • I have found most managers are quite good although my area doesn’t provide sufficient training for first-time managers who have been promoted.

As a woman myself, I feel very respected in the workplace. Promotion opportunities are offered to all employees regardless of gender, ethnic background, sexual preference etc. The RED (Respect, Equity and Diversity) framework enables employees to better understand expectations regarding their own and others' behaviour in our workplace.

I plan programs for the management of the urban forest. This includes writing policy and fact sheets, completing administrative tasks, customer relations and data management, as well as community engagement. Working on city-wide sustainability in the context of climate change and liveability makes this work satisfying, as does seeing its immediate impact on the city.

Sustainability
The ACTPS try to prioritise sustainability in their fleet and building design. We are also going paper-lite and it is our job to plant trees throughout the city, and encourage public transport and active travel to the community as healthier alternatives to polluting modes of transport.
