Management at ACT Public Service

Management is very variable. Some are excellent and some are bad managers.

Great direct manager.

I mainly work with my supervisor and she is great. She is a fantastic mentor and we get along really well.

Depends on the managers' management styles - I had experienced both good and bad.

Management is very accessible and try to give me opportunities to learn and grow skills.

Our managers are great communicators and value their employees. The leaders at higher levels can be distant, but took particular interest in the Graduate Program and made themselves accessible.

Management in my workplace have an open door policy. They often walk around the office and will chat to us individually too to ensure that we know they're happy for us to engage with them and feel comfortable.

I have an excellent supervisor who is supportive, approachable and gives feedback and recognition. She also encourages me to undertake training or tasks that I am interested in.

My direct manager is excellent in every way. My higher manager is very time-poor, which can be difficult to manage. My executive always makes a point to chat to us, but is similarly time-poor which can extend approval times.

I have only had positive experiences with managers. I have had opportunities to work with senior members of the organisation and my input is always taken seriously.

Management and Executives are highly accessible and more than happy to provide mentoring. Feedback is continually provided and my area has weekly recognition of staff through peer feedback.

My relationship with my supervisor is good. Unfortunately he is incredibly busy and is not so good with HR tasks but he does his best to follow up with us and address professional development. The Executives vary and I don't have a good enough relationship with them to make an accurate judgement but from what I've seen they make an effort to communicate with everyone and get feedback but I feel some have their own political agendas they care more about.

I have found most managers are quite good although my area doesn't provide sufficient training for first time managers who have been promoted.

Relationships with managers vary across the organisation - in some areas ongoing feedback is provided and expectations are clearly set, however this varies across areas. Staff support provided is not always consistent with frameworks in place.

I'm personally not a big fan of mentoring but a few mentorship programs and events are available within ACT Public Service. Mentors are usually very helpful and supportive.

I have had the benefit of working in small teams, with close contact with my managers. This has made developing a good working relationship with them easy.

My direct supervisor is very accessible, however some upper management is tougher to contact.

My current manager is excellent and provides excellent insight about my progress. In contrast, I have had two other managers where I have had to "manage up" and who were unable to provide constructive feedback.
